Remember the first time you ever went waterskiing? Friends in the boat yelling, “Keep your tips up, keep your tips up!” The awkwardness of trying to tread water on your back with your life jacket while gripping that plastic rope handle. The chill of the water and the desire to triumphantly shoot across the top of it, like a mountain climber gritting their teeth, determined to conquer that peak. Drawing from wells of courage to finally yell, “Hit it!” and hold on with all your strength. The sluggish weight of the water around you as the boat’s engine roars and pulls. Wavering, wobbling, accelerating, and then, Hallelujah, standing on the surface of the lake, hardly believing the speed, the freedom, the exhilaration. Success!
Of course, to make that exciting conquest, there is the small matter of the watercraft. If you have the wherewithal and the resources, head out to the 13th Annual Portland Boat Show at the Portland Sports Complex (512 Warren Ave) on Thursday, March 2nd, from noon to 8 p.m. to sneak a peek at this year’s boat models, a whole slew of accessories, and general nautical fun. The show also runs on Friday the 3rd from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday the 4th from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday the 5th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adult tickets cost $10, kids 6 to 12 are $5, and children 5 and under get in free. Food and drink will be available at Turf's Restaurant & Bar, connected to the Complex. Plenty of free on-site parking will be available.
Exhibits at the show, put on by PRM Promotions, include bowriders, center console and walkaround fishing boats, wakeboard boats, cuddy cabins, pontoon boats, cruisers, and tournament ski boats. Wander around, discuss the matter with your significant other, and make your fishing, waterskiing, wakeboarding and lake cruising dreams come true. PRM promises that boats ordered this weekend will be ready for spring delivery. Hit it!
