Hadlock Field was quiet Thursday, April 16. It was one of the nonessential businesses closed by COVID-19 on what was supposed to be Opening Day of the 2020 home baseball season for the Portland Sea Dogs. The players, Slugger the mascot, and their fans stayed home, not knowing if and when baseball would return. As photographer Jim Neuger documented the stillness the only person he encountered – besides the iconic family sculpted by Rhoda Sherbell that stands outside the ballpark – was a security guard watching over the adjacent Portland Exposition Building, now a temporary shelter for homeless people displaced by the virus.
